My dog is a vampire
Last summer, I learned something horribly frightening about our cute, cuddly little Sheltie: she is a vampire.
My first clue was the flattened tomato shells dotting my backyard. Yes, tomatoes. Despite a fence around the garden, my "faithful" companion developed a taste for fresh cherry tomatoes. She had the uncanny ability to pluck them off the vine at the peak of flavor before sucking the juices out of them.
Oh, did I happen to mention that I LOVE tomatoes?
My kids cheerfully reported each time they saw the dog with a tomato in her mouth. Truthfully, they were glad to see one less vegetable end up on their plates. I, on the other hand, began a slow, simmering boil. Dogs are carnivores. How the heck did I end up picking the one who loves to eat my precious tomatoes?
This summer, our little power struggle has re-emerged now that the first crop of tomatoes are growing on the vine. I caught her staring at my beauties, but she wisely looked away when I approached. That is the beginning of our little dance. Last year, I never caught her stealing one of my tomatoes red-handed (or red-pawed?), but this year will be different. I put a new fence around my prized possessions. So far, she's been unable to squeeze through. I stand next to my tomato plants whenever possible and give her dirty looks. Nobody is allowed to say "tomato" when she is within earshot.
Last year, I hardly got to eat any tomatoes. However, I'm feeling confident about outwitting my furry vampire this summer. In fact, I even planted basil and I've got some fresh mozzarella in the fridge. All I need is some plump, juicy red tomatoes to complete my meal.
